Update
I caved in and fed the boy, he has been looking at me eat for a few weeks now, but I was not ready for him to go to solids... but I decided it was time... that and he was crying all day... the food helped the crying and the sore boobs from letting him breastfeed...
So, if you notice, I fed him without a bib and with a host of other first time parent mistakes... so he needed a bath... and I loved this picture that the Schatzy took, though the original is in color, I love the black and white.

Just when I thought it was safe...
There is a problem with whooping cough here, so I am tending to worry... but, it could be worse, we could have a typhoid epidemic, or say bubonic plague... oh wait, Arizona does have the plague... (we really so, but it is more "up north")... so, I guess my point is that there will be more posting soon, when I feel human again. Maybe I will even post the picture of Squink and I in a conga line at an event we had here...

One year later...
First let me explain my lack of "prom" attire... In-laws were in town, I was put in a situation where I had to make a choice... I left early anyway, but I had to decide, once I was able to leave, which of the following was the better choice...
- go home to dress and show up really, really, really, really late... OR
- go straight to the prom as is and only be really, really late...
OK, better stop here.
We had fun, but I still carry some guilt over not taking the time to get dressed up. The kids have been nice about it though.
Anyway...
Second, think it is a rather cute first professional picture for the boy. Unfortunately, he will have to say that he went to his first prom with his mother!
* edited because I did not notice that blogger seemed to have an overwrite function going and half of what was written above was lost in the other half of what was written above. If any of you have ever used MSWord... you should know what I mean.

Me(me) is a rather bookish sort
Ok, I have been handed a Me(me) mission by my favorite Curmudgeon in the world and I choose to accept it. Actually, I am rather flattered and books are something I love with a passion, so here goes...
1. You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. Which book do you want to be?
Well, I would have to say I would want to memorize an easy book, because I have a tendency to be lazy. Hey, at least I am willing. But, if I had to pick a book (or series of books) to preserve for the future it would be all of (but not limited to) the following:
- The Wizard of Oz -- by L. Frank Baum because if speaks so much about human behavior.
- A Wrinkle in Time -- by Madeleine L'Engle because it always intrigued me as a little girl, and helped me to love science.
- The Ancestress Hypothesis -- by Kathryn Coe because it speaks about the importance of things as far as mothers are concerned, and my mother wrote it.
- Sonnets from the Portuguese : A Celebration Of Love by Elizabeth Barrett Browning because it is some of the only poetry I can tolerate.
- The Collected Works of W.B. Yeats -- by William Butler Yeats - might also be good and is equally tolerable, but the curmudgeons brother gave me my first book of his works and I therefore have a love hate relationship with Yeats sad how something like that can color ones relationship with a body of work
- Living Poor: A Peace Corps Chronicle -- by Moritz Thomsen(aka Meat Is For Special Days) (though I would love to be able to preserve all his works, he was a curious old man).
- Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner, though I would love to preserve all his work too.
- As for the The Holy Bible: King James Version I would chose the book of Genesis because it has always fascinated me.
- I would also like to preserve the sacred text from other religions as I believe that they have something equally important to offer to humanity.
2. Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
I had a crush on the character Calvin OKeefe from The A Wrinkle In Time series, mainly because he seemed to love Meg for who she was (a geek IMHO)
I thought that a rather romantic notion when I was 9 and read it for the first time.
3. The last book you bought was...?
Oh dear, I buy so many I am not quite sure
I know I am leaving some out but the last group of books I bought are:
- Baudolino -- by Umberto Eco
- Stones for Ibarra -- by Harriet Doerr
- Silk -- by Caitlin R. Kiernan
- The Extinction Club -- by Robert Twigger
- The Dark Hills Divide -- by Patrick Carman
OK, I feel the need to say that in general I only buy books that cost less than five dollars... so everything was on sale... there are a few exceptions though... but that involves anything involving Modesty Blaise, Harry Potter and a random assortment of other children's books...
4. The last book you read was...? The ones that I finished this past week are:
- Baudolino -- by Umberto Eco
- The City of Ember -- by Jeanne Duprau
- The Sparrow -- by Mary Doria Russell
Baudolino was good, and I thought it was interesting in light of the war and the new Pope. City of Ember was a great children's story my cousin lent me (he is 12)... I can't wait to read the rest in the series and The Sparrow was an interesting look at colonization of populated lands in a Sci-Fi way.
5. What are you currently reading?
- The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
- The Metaphysics of Morals by Immanuel Kant
- Baby 411: Clear Answers and Smart Advice for Your Baby's First Year by Ari Brown, Denise Fields (as a resource for that rash he had)
I am enjoying the Thief Lord, though it is going slow for me and that is interesting because I usually read children's stories much faster... Kant is tough, but I am trying to understand what he means when he says morals, because it just doesn't feel right to me (as far as what I think he is saying). Baby 411, was a gift and an easy to use resource guide with online components.
The Dark Hills Divide (mentioned in #3) is the next to pick up, probably tonight... I need something light when I am also reading Kant. Oh, and I should probably note here that I often read all this out loud to the Squink too (he isn't all that fond of Kant either).
6. Five books you would take to a desert island...
- Sophie's World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy -- by Jostein Gaarder
- SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, in Any Climate, on Land or at Sea -- by John 'Lofty' Wiseman
- The World's Wisdom: Sacred Texts of the World's Religions by Philip Novak
- Collected Stories of Wallace Stegner by Wallace Stegner
- The collected works about Modesty Blaise (she is my alter ego after all)
- And because I always break the rules just a little bit I would also take these.
7. Who are you passing this stick on to and why?
My oh my... All of you readers out there, but since Jordana chose three, I will chose three, no make that four... I would love to know what Mistress Tootie Belle (aka Nettie) would do and read though school is over so it might be a bunch of college texts (which don't count Nettie!), and I am intrigued by what Curious Hamster would have to say as well... A Tiramisu Lover might get a kick out of this and perhaps my Favorite Frying Pan would do so...
So to them (and anyone else who is interested, I hope this is not cheating) I pass the reading light...
Ready, steady, GO!!!

With my most sincere apology....
I am writing to apologize for taking up so much bandwidth with pictures of my Squink. You see, as I travel around the virtual world reading other people's blogs, I have become intimidated by most of you. I am so in love with my son, that I eat, live, breathe and sleep Squink... and I just can't seem to muster the strength to put into words the random thoughts that pop into my head that may cause some out there to ponder or to weep with joy at its sheer profoundness (is that even a word?).
I love to read blogs, so many out there, and key are the ones I enjoy and have placed on my blogroll though there are more out there that I link via other peoples blogrolls and just have not taken the time to invest in adding them because it is like a ritual that I visit my favorite curmudgeon which in turn leads me to willows which leads me to the freedom fighter of Londinium... See, it is a trip and a stroll! So, please forgive me if I have not added you yet, I will, I just like to meander from one blog to the next, looking at the precious gems that are dropped into our worlds from your fingertips....
And then there is me, who is so excited about finally being a mother that all I can seem to muster the time for is pictures of my baby and pictures about things that are related to my baby... I mean... Look, I have a collection of pictures on Flickr that are devoted to body parts, his ears, eyes, belly button... or there is the phone journal where I can post pictures of him from anywhere...
So, forgive me if I force you to look at my son on a continuous basis, but I love him and I think all of you should too, because he is a happy baby, a joyful baby, he is so good, that everyone in the world needs to love him, and I invite you all to do so, but I don't want you to feel bad, if you come here and see just another baby (to you!). Because I can't wax poetic enough to do him justice to bring those moments of sheer delight he brings me because he manages to sleep until I wake him up, which means I have time to get his lunchbox ready, to make coffee, to read your blogs with out having to hold or feed him, though I would do so if I had to... I can't correctly tell you about how that the first thing he usually does when he wakes up is smile at me with that laugh that would melt even a terrorists heart. Forgive me for neglecting to tell you about how he is a social baby and will smile and cuddle with anyone that holds him, but saves the best smiles and cuddles for mom. I love my little boy, and I want everyone else to too.
I promise, someday, maybe soon, maybe later, I will try to regale you with my charm and wit, to lead you to think of lovely things or to shrink in horror at the atrocities of life... but for now, I am rather happy just with Squink and Schatz and my mum and family and, for now, that is what I am about, but I do aspire to more and it will come, it is in my plan, but I want to love on this part of my life, because the Squink grows too fast and I want to enjoy this part as much as I can.
Most sincerely yours,
Blair Necessities

just a photo update
Here is a sweet picture of the Squink with his roseola rash... you can see why I thought it may have been fifths from how it affected his cheeks! But look, he is one happy boy.
A picture of Squink and I when he might have been contagious... but still he is in a good mood. And I do have to say that I love my camera phone!
As I try to poorly emulate Mrs. OotFP with my picture of a rose I did not even grow...
I just thought it was so pretty with the gravel behind it...
That smile, I just had to share!
For mothers day, I went to an art opening with my mum and aunt. It was at a lovely place that also had a printing press on the premises and one of the artists there gave Squink these two tiny fairy tale books that he had made. They are really rather clever and sweet.
Oh, and just so you know, I really enjoyed my very first and long awaited mothers day, and I managed to get plenty of rest.

I knew I was in trouble when...
So, it looks like we may be moving, in state, and am frankly petrified about this.
Why, you may ask?
1. It would be during August (average temp is 115F)
2. I have the Squink to worry about
3. The house is old and there is that lead based paint thing
4. It needs a bit of work
...
Oh, I can go on and on...
But is there any advice for me on how to make this a smoother transition, if it does indeed happen?

Sigh
I just want to sleep for three weeks... without a teething baby (only because it is rather painful to be bitten so much)... without the stress of the year end (school)...
On the bright side... my first Mother's Day is coming up... means a whole lot more as a mommy.
But, in spite of getting around seven or eight hours of sleep a night...
I AM SO DAMN TIRED I COULD CRY...

OK, I must have jinxed myself
Which is much more frightening than the real name...
